We should align our own economic development initiatives behind the Opportunity Zones program to ensure that the public and private sectors invest together to forge a more prosperous future for all Californians. Gavin is committed to fostering entrepreneurship, cutting red tape and expanding access to capital, particularly for minority and women-owned enterprises. Gavin is proposing a two pronged strategy to ensure equal access to opportunity and prosperity for all of our children. First, we must do more to help young people and their families who are currently living in poverty. Second, those efforts must be part of a broader strategy to break the cycle of multi-generational poverty through education and creating real opportunities for economic advancement for every child. Concern for the welfare of animals is in Gavin’s DNA. His father Bill Newsom served as president of the Mountain Lion Foundation, which spearheaded the campaign that ended sport hunting of mountain lions.
And Harris, Brown’s former girlfriend, was using her considerable glamour, brains and connections to make her mark on the city and a run for district attorney. While it was all smiles in public, the competition between Guilfoyle and Harris, who had worked together as prosecutors in the DA’s office, was intense. At the same time Guilfoyle, a born-and-raised San Franciscan, was also making news with her new husband, then-Supervisor Newsom, who with the backing of then-Mayor Willie Brown was eyeing a run for mayor.
The state is on fire—and Newsom, as when he was mayor, has made no https://aix-pression.com/tag/phrases-cultes effort to break up and let public agencies take over PG&E. Instead, as his own appointees allowed the company to devastate the state, his only response has been to look for ways to bail out the monopoly. He was a bad mayor and is a bad governor—but the alternatives are way, way worse and the national implications are scary. Newsom has been in charge of a city or the state of California since 2004.
With finances sometimes being unsteady, he said that he worked a variety of jobs prior to going to college. “It is what it is. This is a Republican recall,” he said in an interview with CNN earlier this year. “An RNC-backed Republican recall of White supremacists, anti-Semites and people who are opposed to immigration and immigrants is an accurate assessment of who’s behind this recall.”
In fostering stability, we help these Californians reduce future interactions with the criminal justice system, reduce rates of recidivism, and end the cycle of homelessness. Gavin understands that housing stability is key to helping families advance in their careers and children succeed in their education. To ensure Californians have access to affordable homes, Gavin will lead the effort to build 3.5 million new homes by 2025, and will strengthen both housing assistance programs and tenant protections.
After the landmark November 2003 Massachusetts decision legalizing gay marriage in that state, gay Californians urged their state’s politicians to take similar steps. Newsom responded—and then some—ordering the county clerk to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples, in violation of California law. Four thousand gay couples would receive marriage licenses in the city before the courts ordered the ceremonies to a halt.
He did nothing to excite or encourage progressive voters, just assuming that—as we did in the last election—we could go with him because there are no options. As Newsom tries moving into the national spotlight, he has highlighted abortion and gun control, which is already intact in his state, as the biggest issues in the November midterms. Instead of backing tough-on-crime District Attorneys, California leadership backed soft-on-crime DA’s like George Gascon and now-recalled DA Chesa Boudin, which led to rampant crime in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
It wasn’t until 2006, halfway through his first term, that Newsom really began to reengage with the business of running the city, beyond the staff-level work and regular press releases touting their accomplishments, usually in an overstated way. That was when proposed limits on residential parking spaces and expansion of car-free hours in Golden Gate Park angered Newsom’s conservative base and forced him to plug back into the city’s political dynamics. And when Newsom’s took a petulant and imperious approach to doing so, the die was cast for the divisions to come.
